Scalp micropigmentation, yay or nay?

How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?

The price depends on the degree of your hair loss. The greater the treatment, the more expensive your treatment will be. In addition, there will also be a difference in price from clinic to clinic. An SMP treatment costs between $1.000 and $3.500 USD. With SMP, it is important that you choose a clinic based on results and not on price. SMP is a permanent result that is pigmented into your scalp. It is not an item that you can return the next day. We therefore do not recommend that you choose a cheaper provider to save a few hundred bucks, but are left with an unfortunate result that requires laser treatment or SMP rescue. Always look for results and customer testimonials.

Are the results always realistic?

SMP is a highly effective cosmetic treatment for hair loss. But there can be a big difference in the results. There is a long way between success and failure. Some SMP treatments may look like ink painted on a bald head, and others are so realistic that one would think it is your natural hair. Your therapist’s experience and competencies are all crucial. A realistic result requires the right pigmentation depth, the right pigment color, realistic distance between dots and different shades of pigment. A natural SMP result is not just dots on a scalp, it requires attention to detail.

What are the disadvantages of Scalp Micropigmentation?

Bad Treatments – bad SMP treatments can look very unnatural and attract unnecessary attention. SMP should solve your problem and not create a bigger one.
Short cut look – SMP is not hair. It is a simulation of short haircuts. You must therefore accept that your short haircut is permanent.

What are the benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation?

Guaranteed result – An SMP course of treatment requires 3-5 sessions. You will therefore have your finished result after just one month.
Price level – The price is between $1.000 and $3.500 USD, and is more affordable compared to a hair transplant
Minimal maintenance – SMP requires no subsequent medication. You just need to have a light touch-up every two years.
No surgery – SMP is a cosmetic treatment that does not require surgery. It is painless and you are not left with scars on the back of your head.
Hairline as desired – Your therapist can design your new hairline exactly the way you want it. However, it is recommended that you go for a realistic look.

With a hair tattoo, you can cover a full or half-bald head. It gives the illusion of hair stubble, so you can get some of your old look back. Learn more about it below and find out if it’s for you.

Many men experience at some point in their lives that they begin to lose hair. For some it means a receding hairline, while for others it means a completely bald head – perhaps even at a young age.

For many, it is difficult to live with hair loss, especially for young men, as there is a lot of identity associated with hair.

If you are looking for a permanent solution to the problem, hair tattooing or Scalp micropigmentation (SMP), as it is also called, can be a beneficial treatment. This is because it allows you to get a new hairline tattooed or even a tattoo that covers the entire scalp. Thus, it gives the illusion that you have small hair stubble and not a completely bald head.

However, it is not only on the scalp that the treatment can be used. Many women also choose to have their eyebrows treated so that they get the shape they want.

What is a scalp micropigmentation treatment?

A hair tattoo or SMP treatment, as it is also abbreviated to, is thus a tattoo of your scalp. The hair is tattooed with a dot that matches your hair color. Thus you get a very lifelike result.

The tattoo is neither a surgical nor a medical procedure. This means that it is much easier for you to get the procedure. You do not have to be on sick leave and you do not need to consult a doctor before choosing to have it done.

Therefore, scalp pigmentation is an easier, faster and cheaper solution than, for example, a hair transplant.

Why do I lose hair?

Before you look at scalp micropigmentation, it is important that you understand the cause of your hair loss.

Genetics – Your hair follicles appropriate DNA, which is inherited from your parents. You have their hair color and thus also their lack of hair growth. If your parents suffer from hair loss, there is a good chance that you will also suffer from hair loss.
Hormones – Men who inherit hair follicles that are at risk for hair loss are often hypersensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone dilutes cold hair, and inhibits new hair growth.
Other factors – Smoking, alcohol abuse, poor diet, stress and special medications can cause hair loss.

WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a form of treatment that takes place by using microneedles on a thin layer of pigment in your scalp using simulated short hair. SMP creates an appearance of full hair with thin layers of pigment.

1. How does an SMP treatment take place?

An SMP treatment is often divided into 3 sessions. Some treatments may require multiple sessions, but 3-5 sessions are average of all SMP treatments.

The actual treatment takes place by microneedles applying microscopic dots of pigment in your scalp. The process is a bit like a regular tattoo, but there is a difference between the needles, the working depth and the pigment. The dots are used in the outer layer of your scalp, and look like short-cut hair stubble.

The first part of a treatment course with Micropigmentation of the scalp requires a consultation. Her you meet your therapist who hears about your goals. They discuss the shape of your upcoming hairline, your hair color as well as the density of your hair follicles. Once the therapist has an overview of your exact goals, the treatment can begin.

The microneedles leave microscopic wounds in the outer layer of your scalp when pigmented. The immune system will counteract these wounds and try to heal the exposed skin. This means a fraction of the applied pigment will “fade” away in the days after your session. The gradual fading is the reason why at least 3 sessions are required to create a satisfactory result with micropigmentation of the scalp.

An SMP treatment is not just dots that damage your scalp. A good SMP result requires different shades of pigment. Most often, lighter pigment will be used in the initial session, after which dark pigment will be used in the last sessions. It gives a natural look of different hair follicles that not just look like a tattooed scalp. This technique is called SMP 3D.

2. How long does an SMP treatment course take?

A treatment course with scalp micropigmentation requires a minimum of 3 sessions. You should take a one-week interval between each session. You can therefore expect a finished result after at least one month.

3. How long does SMP treatment last?

This full-bodied result holds up to 2 years before it begins to fade. After 2 years, you should have an SMP touch-up, as there is a lighter treatment where your faded spots are pigmented to recreate this full-bodied look of short-cut hair.

4. What is the pigment made of?

The pigment is organic ink, which is found in distilled water, organic powder and ethyl alcohol.

5. What are the side effects and risks of SMP?

Micropigmentation of the scalp has no significant side effects. Immediately after your session, your scalp will be red, but it will disappear within 24 hours of your treatment.

6. Is SMP for men only?

Micropigmentation of the scalp is an effective treatment for both men and women. Women are also affected by hair loss, and more women have started SMPs against hair loss.

There is a significant difference in Scalp Micropigmentation for women and men. Men often use SMP to simulate short haircuts and go for the short haircut. Women, on the other hand, use SMP to camouflage thin-haired spots and reduce bald spots on the scalp. The therapist will therefore have pigments to choose from for a full-bodied look.

7. How much maintenance does SMP require?

SMP requires minimal maintenance. Avoid sitting in the sun for too long. UV light can cause this pigment to fade faster.

Be aware for the first 5-7 days after your treatment should avoid movement as well as washing your hair with shampoo.
