The dealer will then take a second card and place it in front of a space for a player to bet. Once all of the bets have been placed, play begins. The dealer must stand on any total that is sixteen or less, and hit on any total that is seventeen or higher.

Once the dealer has dealt the cards to each player, the player must make a playing decision. To do so, the player must show his willingness to take another card. In shoe games, this requires the player to tap the table behind the cards or make a beckoning motion with a finger. In hand-held games, the player must scratch the card lightly on the felt to request another one.
